Powerful White-Label Platform

How Organización Editorial Mexicana (OEM) launched their new digital platform with 44 publications in 6 months based on XP Layer

Initial Situation

The largest Mexican media company faced significant challenges with its digital infrastructure:

  • Outdated On-Premise System: The platform was based on Escenic 6, limiting scalability and flexibility.
  • Non-Responsive Design: No apps and non-responsive web design led to poor user experience across devices.
  • Limited IT Resources: Only a small team of IT specialists managed the platform.
  • Revenue Limitations: The absence of paywall capabilities restricted monetization options.
  • Lack of Engagement Tools: No push notifications, newsletters, or data-driven insights were in place.
  • Content Management Gaps: No metrics or tools for intelligent content management existed.

Goals

The client set ambitious goals to modernize their platform:

  • Develop a white-label platform for 44 online publications that are „united but not uniform.“
  • Enable new revenue streams with paywall and subscription capabilities.
  • Ensure efficient site management with minimal resources.
  • Implement data-driven content orchestration to improve user engagement.
  • Focus on using powerful products with predictable costs, avoiding complex, costly projects.

Our Solution

We delivered a robust and efficient platform solution based on XP Layer, our complementary orchestration software for CUE, with the following advantages:

Platform Orchestration Made Simple:

  • Content Management Integration: While content creation occurs in CUE, XP Layer orchestrates content delivery without duplicating data.
  • Seamless Service Integration: XP Layer integrates ad tech, AI tools, third-party APIs, and more, delivering modular content across multiple brands and channels.
  • Centralized User Interface: Editors and page builders can manage all frontend channels in one place, minimizing the need for IT support.

Reusable Widgets:

  • Modular Components: We use modular widgets that can be placed freely wherever needed. These widgets simplify the setup and management of all types of frontend channels.
  • Reusable Across Publications: The widgets are reusable across all publications and channels, maximizing efficiency and consistency.
  • Customizable and Decoupled: Widgets are fully customizable but remain decoupled from the CMS CUE on one hand and from the frontends on the other hand.

Inheritance Logic:

  • Global Page-Building Configurations: Page-building configurations can be set up once on a global level and automatically applied across all publications.
  • True White-Label Platform: This approach enables a white-label platform that creates synergies while delivering a single-brand experience for each publication.
  • Efficiency at Scale: This capability saves time and costs by eliminating redundant work.

Fast and Smooth Time-to-Market:

  • XP Layer StarterKit: We use a proven feature and widget catalog as starting point, to avoid that our customers have to start from scratch.
  • CUE Mock-up Adapter: We enable parallel frontend creation alongside content migration (managed by Stibo DX). This approach makes it possible to create frontends from the beginning on. We don’t have to wait until the content migration is done.
  • Smooth Go-Live: XP Layer is able to integrate multiple systems simultaneously, therefore also all CUE Versions such as Escenic, Content Engine, Content Store, and CUE Gateway. That makes a seamless transition from the old to the new platform possible.

With XP Layer, the largest Mexican media company successfully launched a modern, scalable digital platform for its 44 online publications. Each publication maintains its identity while benefiting from a centralized system. Paywalls and subscription options unlocked new monetization opportunities, while editors, product managers and sales teams gained control through a centralized UI, reducing IT reliance. Data-driven content orchestration and metrics enabled smarter, user-focused strategies, ensuring improved user engagement. Our product-based approach enabled OEM to transform its digital presence efficiently and cost-effectively. The client now has a future-ready platform that supports both innovation and sustainable growth, delivered within the ambitious 6-month timeline.
